Alice's Mommy Blog

A year in review.

It’s hard to believe that 2012 is over. Tonight we complete our tradition (one we started in university 10 years ago) and will be dining on Chinese takeout and will have a tv show or movie marathon. In the past we’ve done horror movies, Tim Burton movies, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and this year it’s Star Trek! Steve will pick an episode from the original series and one from the next generation, while I will pick the voyager and deep space 9 episodes. After those, we’ll watch a movie, and it will be a cross over one!

So now that my festivity plans are out of the way, I’m thinking about my resolutions from this year and how they went, and what next year’s goals should be. My major goal was to focus on my family and enjoy my time with them and while I forgot that a bit while I was marathon training I’ve gotten back into it at the end of the year, so I’m going to call it a success!

Highlights:

  • ran my first marathon!
  • survived my first marathon thanks to Cecilia.
  • made a real effort to get closer with my husband’s family so they are more involved in the girls’ lives.
  • reached my pre-pregnancy weight again.
  • earned a personal best in a 5k race and a half-marathon.
  • donated blood for the first time.
  • applied for Canadian citizenship.
  • used my marathon for good by raising money for the local women’s shelter.

Struggles:

  • going back to work after being home with Katrina for a year.
  • the choice of whether or not to have another baby.
  • Steve’s car accident in January (he was fine and all the damage was superficial).
  • Steve left his job to work for himself and turned everything I know upside down.
  • was bit by a dog while running (and had to go to the ER because of it).
  • losing touch with a friend as we drifted apart.

So obviously not everything about my year was stellar but I have far more wonderful memories than bad, and I’m excited for the adventures of the new year. My hopes and dreams for 2013 will not be many, but they will be meaningful to me.

  1. Try to conceive our final baby (and if we do, have a healthy pregnancy and delivery)
  2. Keep running during the year regardless of what happens. I would like to hit 1,000km at the end of the year. Figure that is doable, even if a lot of them are slow pregnant kms, though if 9 months + recovery is in 2013, I won’t hold myself to that number.
  3. Make my girls a priority again, and let myself leave some house things until later so I can be with them in the moment.
  4. Make my husband a priority again. I have super mom down and now I think it’s time to remind him why he married me and be more of a partner and less of a nag.
  5. Be happy with what we have. I often get carried away with the future and what I want for us and forget to enjoy where we are and what we have right now. God has blessed us and I need to appreciate that more.

So those are my goals. What are yours?
