Getting my groove back.

Apparently as a human being I need a certain amount of sleep to function. Who would have thought that! So another obvious fact, when running crazy amounts and distances you will most likely require extra sleep to help your body handle this extra strenuous activity in addition to needing extra calories. Once again, what an incredible idea!

So if you can’t tell, I’ve started eating more, and sleeping more. Most nights I’m in my bed by 9pm and asleep before 10pm appears on my alarm clock. Wow, do I feel old! But considering the baby wakes up between 5 and 7am every morning and my running mornings start before 6am I think this isn’t quite as crazy (or old lady-ish) as it sounds. If you think about it that’s like going to bed at 10:30 and getting up at 7:30 which sounds more like a normal adult. But I have to say the forbidding of laptops in our bedroom is helping. If I want to play on my Mac (like right now) I have to go elsewhere, which is usually on the couch. But then when I am in bed around 9pm I curl up under my blanket with a good book (I’m trying to work my way through my new Jane Austen set) and by 9:30pm I’m sleepy and out before 10pm. I hope I can keep this up, because sleep is making me feel like someone has recharged one of my batteries and I feel much more human and like me!

Here is my funny story of the day. My husband asked me on the weekend why I don’t go out more in the evenings to get a break from the kids and stress of everything (you know when I went to the Olympic party) and I just laughed at him. Honestly, think about it. I have Mondays off but I spend it running errands, cooking and cleaning. Then after I pick the babies up from daycare I go get my vegetables, come home and cook dinner. Then I am tired or need to go to bed early, because Tuesday I am up at 5 something to run my speed or tempo run. So Tuesday night I’ve been up since before 6am, and go to bed early. Wednesday is the same as Monday, in that I need to go to bed early so that I can get up before 6am to run on Thursday. Are you seeing the pattern? Now repeat for Friday and Saturday. Then Saturday night I am extremely exhausted because I’ve run some crazy long distance (breaking 30km this weekend) and then come home to chase my kids around all afternoon or let’s be honest, lay on the ground and let them bounce on my head until it’s time to cook dinner and then put everyone to bed. Then Sunday we have church at 9:30am so no sleeping in, and then after that I have to fit in a little 5k. Oh, and I also need to work cross training into those non-running days, and of course I work 8:30-4pm Tuesday – Friday, and after labour day Monday to Friday. So as you can see my life is crazy busy and so when he asks me why I don’t go out more I honestly look at him like he has a hole in his head, because I can’t find the time to create a new playlist for my ipod and he wants me to get a social life? The man is insane!

Okay it’s 9:04pm which means laptop goes to sleep and I work on my Mansfield Park! Night!

I know what you mean about the lack of energy/desire for a social life. One of biggest fails of my New Year’s goals is making more time for friends. I figure in 17-18 years I’ll have the energy for it 😉
